Field Trip to Macau Giant Panda Pavilion

“Pandas and Pizza!” yells one of the students as he checks with an ETA just before getting on the bus to the Giant Panda Pavilion. The four ETAs gathered 26 students on March 26th, fed them, took them down to Coloane, watched the two pandas, along with other animals, saw some acrobatic performers and got a tour of the panda information center at the Giant Panda Pavilion. Throughout the day, the ETAs facilitated the interactions and led the activities that make informal English learning so effective, led the students in English social activities including the game “Where the Wind Blows”, and facilitated conversations while moving around the park and observing some of the wildlife such as ostriches, monkeys and birds. At 2 pm the entire group was ushered in to see Kai Kai and Xin Xin. The pandas entertained the crowds simply by eating lunch! Afterwards the students and ETAs enjoyed a Chinese style acrobatics show outside in the pavilion. Later, much was learned about conservation efforts regarding Giant Pandas during a guided English tour of the Panda Information Center. Lastly the students and ETAs sat down to debrief about the day‟s activities expressing their thoughts and experiences in English. You can be sure more fun and educational trips are on the horizon!
