On Tuesday, October 8th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. ELC teacher Dan Burge (pictured above with UMAC students) hosted “Big Two Game Night” in ILG120 as part of the ELC Fall 2013 Events. During the event, participants were encouraged to use English in a natural setting while playing Big Two. A video representation of the game was shown on a projector at the start of the activity to assist in understanding the game. Then it was “GAME ON” and an incentive of an ultimate prize to the winner: cash coupons for delicious Haagen-Dazs ice-cream. Players sat in groups of 4 and played multiple hands until there was one final winner in that group. Play continued until there were 2 finalists who proceeded to the final table for one last game to see who would be crowned Big Two Champion of UMAC 2013. This accolade went to Kiki, a 2nd year student of UMAC who also studies at The E.L.C. Congratulations Kiki.
Host and ELC teacher Dan Burge, a proud Englishman and avid card player, was so impressed with the player’s ability and enthusiasm for cards that to conclude proceedings he decided to teach the participants a famous British card game, trying to impart a bit of his beloved culture to local settings. The great British card game of “Whist” was introduced and observers had the chance to encounter 2 card games from very different cultures: China and England. It is fun to play cards !!!!!!!
