The ELC proudly hosted the 2nd Annual ―English Language Leadership Symposium‖ June 15-16, 2012. Topics in the two day conference were triangulated around the themes of students, curriculum and materials development, and faculty with plenary discussions by Dr. Kay Smith of the College of Charleston and Dr. Dayle Smith of the University of San Francisco. Both of the professors shared their experiences with high-impact learning, which included the development of peer education opportunities and service learning activities. However, all of the conference sessions moved beyond the traditional presentation format and into thorough discussions that all of the attendees actively participated. Representatives from tertiary schools in Hong Kong, mainland China, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and our neighboring Macau institutes shared their experiences in using peer tutors, common reading groups, online materials, independent learning, EAP and ESL curricula, and assessment for faculty members, just to name a few. A closing plenary discussion moderated by Dr. Art Bell, also from the University of San Francisco, allowed leaders in various English Language Centres like our own to express the types of leadership that had been most successful at their institutes. The ELLS2012 was tremendously successful, and a special thanks goes out for all the help and support provided by our ELC faculty and staff who worked to make the event happen.
