ELC Spring 2014 events: Activity about “Dating”, 22 April 2014

On Tuesday, 22th April, ELC Teaching Fellow Dan Burge held an activity with students to discuss about “dating”. The activity started with getting to know one another and then proceeded onto discussions about dating, relationships and marriage. It was interesting to see different perspectives on this topic whilst comparing Western and Eastern views. Various videos were watched and debated on. These included what to do and what not to do when dating, differences between male and female characteristics and personalities and the concept of “Leftover Women” in China. This particular topic aroused fierce criticism from most in attendance. Everyone was baffled by discovering the controversial belief of many in China that 25 years old is considered an age when women must have attained marriage. The teacher was just as flabbergasted. If women in China are not successfully linked in wedding matrimony by this time, they are considered an ultimate failure. It was also interesting to watch video clips and discuss a region in South Western China where most women do not actually belief in the concept of marriage. It is seen as completely unnecessary in their culture. In stark contrast to the viewpoints of the Han Chinese and many other regions of China on this topic, it was fascinating to gain insights on various people’s opinions and thoughts on a subject of delicacy such as this. Thank you to everyone for turning up. It was a good opportunity to practice English listening and speaking and to have fun socialising for a couple of hours.
